Clin A/Professor Varma underwent his specialist training in Radiology at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologist (RANZCR) in 2000. His specialist training included an accredited Fellowship in MRI at The Alfred Hospital. A/Professor Varma was appointed Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Department of Surgery, Monash University in 2003 and currently is the Clinical Associate Professor for the  Department of Surgery at Monash University.

In 2009 he was appointed RANZCR Rouse Fellow and travelled to New Zealand delivering lectures and teaching radiology registrars and giving the Keynote Rouse Fellow presentation at the New Zealand Branch Annual Scientific Meeting. In 2011 A/Professor Varma was awarded RANZCR Rohan Williams Travelling Professor and travelled to various Deaneries in UK and delivered numerous lectures and tutorials to the trainees the UK specialist radiology training program. He was the Director of Training & Research for the RANZCR accredited training program from 2003 to 2012. A/Professor Varma was the first elected Junior Radiologist representative to the RANZCR Federal Council in 2002 for a two year term &  subsequently  elected as a Federal Councillor in 2004, 2007 and 2010 for further three year terms and was Vice President RANZCR 2010-2011.

Other achievements include, being elected President RANZCR 2012-2013, admitted to Singapore Academy of Medicine as Honorary Fellow in 2013, examiner BMEdSc thesis, Monash, Faculty of Medicine Nursing & Health Sciences in 2008, and Founder Chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Emergency Radiology Group. This is a Special Interest Group established in 2015 under the auspices of RANZCR.

A/Professor Varma was appointed Radiologist-in-Charge Trauma and Emergency at the Alfred in 2000, Deputy Director Radiology in 2003, Director of MRI Aug 2004-2005. He had a key role in planning for RANZCR/NATA Accreditation 2004-2005 Chairman, RANZCR/NATA stage 3 Department Accreditation.

He is currently the Acting Director of Radiology, Head of Trauma and Emergency Radiology at The Alfred Hospital. He is also on the advisory panel of various international projects and completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors course in January 2013.

His research and academic involvement include over 40 publications including peer reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts as well as a Supervisor of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (Masters and PhD).  A/Professor Varma was the convener of 2007 RANZCR Annual Scientific Meeting, Melbourne and 2012 Combined AOCR-RANZCR ASM, Sydney. He has also been Past Chairman, Communication & Membership portfolio at RANZCR Federal Council, Past Chairman Annual Scientific Meeting Management Committee RANZCR Federal Council, and Associate Editor and reviewer of Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology.

His particular area of interest is Trauma and Emergency Radiology and MRI, and the role of radiology in the integrated multidisciplinary approach to imaging and management of multi-trauma patients. His main area of research is in traumatic brain and cervical spine injuries. He joins the Australia-India Trauma Systems Collaboration as a delegate for The Alfred Hospital.
